Watch This Guy Try to Shred His Abs by Doing 300 Crunches for 30 Days

Following on from recent videos in which he completed 300 squats and 300 pushups for 30 days to see how much they would change his body, Evan Zhang (a.k.a. “Your Average Gent” on YouTube) turns his attention to his abs for his latest physical challenge, and sets out to do 300 crunches every day for a month.

“The full range of motion is actually really short, basically curling to the highest you can without lifting your hips,” he says at the start of the challenge. “I don’t know what to expect, but I am looking forward to growing those abs.”

He explains that he does his reps throughout each day, rather than attempting to perform all 300 crunches in “one shot,” which would be bound to cause exhaustion. He breaks them down into 10 sets of 30 to begin with, but as the month progresses and his endurance increases, he bumps that up to sets of 50.

“I wouldn’t say it is easy, but it is the least demanding 30-day challenge out of all my challenges,” he says. “My abs are able to fully recover after each day of 300 crunches, probably because the abs are a relatively smaller muscle group compared to your quads and chest muscles.”

Over the course of 30 days, Zhang’s waist drops from 79cm to 78cm. He also loses around 1 pound (0.5 kgs) in the process. And he is pleased with the visible physical results. “My abs look a little bit more protruding, a little bit more defined, and a little bit more taut,” he says. “Doing lots and lots of crunches won’t really burn a lot of calories, it is mainly to build your muscle endurance and make your abs pop out more.”
