Like many other athletes around the world right now (golf pros come to mind), NHL goalie Philipp Grubauer has had to temporarily forego his sport of choice and find other ways to stay active during the coronavirus lockdown. In a recent interview with NHL.com, Grubauer shared that he’s been regularly weightlifting and cycling instead.
A German native who currently resides in Denver, Grubauer has played for the Colorado Avalanche since last season. He spent the previous six seasons of his career with the Washington Capitals, where he was a part of the team that won the Stanley Cup Finals in 2018.
Grubauer sustained a lower body injury during a game in February, but finished recovering right before the lockdown set in. While Grubauer said he’s rather disappointed he couldn’t get right back to playing hockey, he seems to be making the best of it.
“Before the lockdown came, I picked up some weights out of the gym and built up something in my garage,” Grubauer told NHL.com. “I bought a racing bike, and I am cycling about 100 miles per day, as well as doing a workout with weights.”

Though it’s unclear whether Grubauer was a cyclist prior to the lockdown, one thing’s for sure—100-mile rides are no joke, even for experienced cyclists.
He’s got the right idea, too, since cycling can be a safe and efficient way to get in a good workout while still practicing social distancing measures. (Here’s how you can safely ride outside during the coronavirus pandemic.)
“The Rocky Mountains are one reason why I stayed here in Denver,” Grubauer said. “I’d love to go hiking in the mountains as well, but you have to watch out that there are not too many people out there, which wouldn’t be too good. I prefer cycling.”
