For months, UFC president, Dana White, has been teasing fight fans with the prospect of Fight Island, but finally we know where it is, what it’ll look like and who exactly is going to be fighting there.
Yas Island in Abu Dhabi will be transformed into Fight Island in July and will host four events next month beginning with UFC 251, which will feature title fights including Jose Aldo versus Peter Yan, Alexander Volkanovski versus Max Holloway and the main event, Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman versus Gilbert Burns.
“Everything will happen on the island,” White said on the UFC’s Facebook page. “Nobody will leave the island. They’re going to have their own private training quarters where people can train themselves.
“We really do have an Octagon out in the sand. The infrastructure’s going to be unbelievable. The people in Abu Dhabi do everything right. Everything is first class; everything is done beyond belief.”
In order to ensure the event complies with strict public health guidelines, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism intends to secure a “safety zone” inside of which will sit the arena, hotel, training facilities and dining areas. This safety zone will only be accessible to the fighters and their coaches, UFC personnel and Yas Island employees.
Speaking about Fight Island previously, White said: “Abu Dhabi has been an amazing location to hold fights over the past 10 years and it is the perfect place for these events.
“The infrastructure we are building will be such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the fighters that’s never been done before – from the arena, the private training facility, and the Octagon on the island – it’s going to be an experience that none of us will ever forget.”
This isn’t the first time the UFC has staged a fight at Yas Island. The UFC has visited there three times previously including for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Lightweight title fight against Dustin Poirier, which was held on the island back in September 2019.
