As a hugely popular singer who doubles as a heartthrob on the side, Shawn Mendes is used to getting thirsty comments from his fans—and now he’s actively courting them. The musician sent his Instagram comments into meltdown yesterday when he uploaded a couple of photos of himself casually relaxing in the water while on vacation in Mallorca, wearing nothing but his swimmers, with his lean, ripped physique on full display.
While he appears to be extremely comfortable in his own skin in the idyllic photos, that has not always been the case. Mendes revealed in an interview last year that he has experienced some real body image issues, which were exacerbated by his Calvin Klein underwear campaign. He stated that he felt his fans expected a certain level of physical perfection which led to him prioritizing hitting the gym at the expense of other areas of his life:
“Some days I would have three hours of sleep [because] I’d get up two hours early just to be able to work out,” he said, before explaining that he has been able to find a better, healthier balance in his life now. “Taking that extra few hours of sleep, instead of waking up to pump iron, is a better choice sometimes,” he added.
Not that his physique appears to have suffered since this epiphany. Back in May this year, Mendes shared a “casual” shirtless photo of himself enjoying his morning coffee, once again flaunting his abs, to the delight of those thirsty fans who stay in his mentions.
