Fitness expert Joanna Hall answers your questions

I miscarried at four months over a year ago, and I have been trying to shift the weight I put on during my pregnancy, which I am struggling with psychologically. I’ve joined a gym, but hate going. Can you recommend a fitness strategy that’s as cost-effective as the gym?

I’d like to share a client’s success story with you. Her tale is similar to yours, and she is happy for me to share her experience, as it made a significant contribution to her at a very difficult time in her life. She suffered a miscarriage at five months. Like you, she joined a gym, but felt disillusioned and upset that her pregnancy weight was still there after six months, reminding her of the loss of her baby. She joined a small group programme of mine and followed the Step Counter diet. This involves timed brisk walking and daily accumulated step targets, abdominal exercises on three days a week and applying my carb curfew to the evening meal. After 28 days, she had lost 12lb.

Potential challenges were identified, and progress was reinforced and reviewed at the start and end of each week. This evaluation is crucial, nurturing a sense of control and confidence in one’s body, and building what I call a template of success.

Here’s the programme outline.

Week one: 15 minutes continuous walking, plus 5,000 steps on your pedometer.

Week two: 20 minutes continuous walking, plus 8,000 steps on your pedometer.

Week three: 25 minutes continuous walking, plus 9,000 steps on your pedometer.

Week four: 30 minutes continuous walking, plus 10,000 steps on your pedometer.

Once the programme ended, she kept up her walking and lost a further 5lb.
