Will Smith’s ongoing fitness journey has been well-documented. The actor went viral a couple of weeks ago when he shared a shirtless photo, declared that he was in the worst shape he’s ever been, and announced that he would be embarking on a 12-week weight loss transformation. Since then, he has been joined by other celebrities like Dr. Dre, Anthony Anderson and Marlon Wayans who have all voiced their support for what he is attempting, and have vowed to work on their own fitness goals in time for summer.
While his transformation will eventually be chronicled in a new YouTube series, in the meantime Smith has been posting regular updates from his first forays back into the gym, including his first shoulder press workout, and practicing his barbell squat technique without any weights.
In his most recent Instagram post, Smith revealed that he has been learning yoga as part of his new workout routine. “I’m trying fitness,” he wrote in the caption of the short video montage. “FITNESS body into some damn yoga pants.” The clip shows Smith attempting a series of yoga poses, some of which require a little intervention to adjust his form.
Yoga can be a useful aid to weight loss. While some more intense forms of the practice can help the body to burn calories at a greater rate, it can also offer other health benefits, such as stress management, which can lead to reduced blood pressure and appetite, as well as facilitating a better night’s sleep. And for men over 40, like Smith, certain yoga positions like the cat-cow pose can be especially beneficial when it comes to improving posture and avoiding back pain.
