Dr Chris reveals how eyes can indicate high cholesterol levels
Pharmacist Duncan Reid, based at Pharmacy2U, said supplements are great for supporting heart health and maintaining good cholesterol levels.
One supplement that can support the heart, cardiovascular health and normal healthy cholesterol is red krill oil, said Reid.
Red krill oil is a good source of omega-3, and the supplements could also be beneficial for eye and brain health.
Another supplement worth considering is Cardioace Plus, said Reid.
This “helps to safeguard levels of nutrients vital to heart health and focus on helping to maintain healthy blood cholesterol levels”.

Reid also suggested odourless garlic soft gels that can help “maintain a healthy blood pressure and lower your cholesterol levels”.
While cholesterol levels can vary from person to person, Reid said: “In general the lower the LDL [low-density lipoprotein cholesterol] and non-HDL [non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol], the better.
“And the higher the HDL [high-density lipoprotein cholesterol], the better.”
Total cholesterol should usually be 5mmol/L [millimoles per litre] or below.”

The quickest way to lower cholesterol is through making immediate dietary changes.
Reid said: “Focus on reducing saturated and trans fats, while increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in soluble fibre.”
Another key element of cholesterol management is regular exercise.
“Regular exercise and lifestyle modifications can further expedite cholesterol reduction,” Reid confirmed.
The time it takes to reduce cholesterol levels can vary but, with lifestyle changes, some people might see improvement within weeks.
More significant changes may take several months to a year, said Reid.
He added: “Medications prescribed by a doctor can help to reduce cholesterol faster.”
