Sarah Hyland is giving herself a little public motivation to get back in the gym.
The 28-year-old Modern Family star shared a selfie from a past beach day — when she wore an itsy-bitsy golden bikini — on Instagram to encourage her to meet her fitness goals.
“I’m putting this #tbt out there to remind myself that I can make it to the gym,” Hyland wrote.
The actress, who has been in and out of the hospital over the past year for various health problems, some stemming from her kidney dysplasia, said she needs to realize that she’s stronger than she thinks.
“Lately I’ve been making excuses because of the constant pain from health issues. But no more,” she said. “A woman’s body is a miraculous thing and we can do anything we set our minds to. #summer #bodygoals here I come.”
Being able to work out at all is a big improvement for Hyland, who previously spent months in exile from the gym because of her health. In 2017, prior to her second kidney transplant that November, she was on medication that caused her to lose significant weight and was dealing with criticism from fans.
“I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting,” she said in May 2017. “I love to be STRONG … Strength is everything. Being strong has gotten me where I am. Both mentally and physically. I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.’ ”
“It’s never fun to look in the mirror and see your hard work at the gym fade away or have your legs be the size of one’s arms,” she continued. “But I know that when I get clearance I will be able to get back to the STRONG, lean, and fabulous self I know I can be.”
With her health in a better place, Hyland is able to exercise again, but just needs the motivation. Perhaps she should take her own advice and work out naked in front of a mirror again, as she did in September.
“Seriously. I suggest you all do it,” she said. “Because you’re in front of the mirror and you’re like, ‘Must have Dua Lipa abs!’ “
Naked mirror workouts or not, her boyfriend Wells Adams clearly approved of the bikini snap.
“Coming straight home now,” he commented. “Don’t move.”
