According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Wayne Farms, LLC, recalled nearly half a million pounds of chicken products last week. The Decatur, Alabama company voluntarily recalled 438,960 pounds of frozen, fully-cooked chicken products “that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal pieces,” per the USDA.
The products (frozen, ready-to-eat, fully-cooked chicken) were produced from July 4 to July 17, 2018, on various dates. The products that have been recalled include Fully Cooked Diced Chicken, Fully Cooked Grill Marked White Chicken Strips, and FC Grill Chicken Meat. The full list of products subject to the recall can be found here.
The recalled products have an establishment number of “P-20214” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were shipped to distributors, restaurants, and “further processing locations” nationwide, the USDA reports.
Wayne Farms received a customer complaint on July 27, 2018, which tipped them off to the issue. After further investigation into “the nature of the foreign material complaint,” the company reported the problem to FSIS on September 4. The recall was issued the following day.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or reactions after consumption of the affected chicken products, however, the USDA advises that anyone concerned about illness should contact a doctor.
Additionally, the FSIS warns that contaminated product may be in consumers’ fridges or freezers. If you’ve purchased any of the affected products, do not eat them—they should be thrown away or returned. You can reach Wayne Farms by calling (678) 450-3092.
The USDA has called this a Class I recall, meaning “a health hazard situation where this is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
