Hair health is integral to our wellbeing so finding ways to boost it is of paramount importance. Naturally, diet plays a key role in keeping the hair luscious and abundant. Speaking to Holly and Phil on ITV’s This Morning, beauty writer Liz Earle said seaweed should be included in one’s protective armoury.
According to Earle, seaweed is the richest natural source of iodine.
What is iodine and what is the link to hair health?
Iodine is a trace mineral that helps make thyroid hormones, which help keep cells and the metabolic rate (the speed at which chemical reactions take place in the body) healthy, explains the NHS.
Research indicates that when your thyroid hormone levels are low, your hair follicles may stop regenerating.
Over time, this may result in hair loss.
For this reason, people with an iodine deficiency may also suffer from hair loss.
One study in 700 people found that 30 percent of those with low thyroid hormone levels experienced hair loss.
As Earle pointed out, sushi eaters will get lots of iodine due to its spinach content.
Dairy products, such as whole milk and yoghurt, are another great source of iodine, she said.

According to the NHS, adults need 140 micrograms (μg) of iodine a day.
“Most people should be able to get all the iodine they need by eating a varied and balanced diet,” explains the health body.
It adds: “If you are following a strict vegan diet and do not eat any fish then you may want to consider taking an iodine supplement.”
Other dietary tips to boost hair health
Another ingredient that nourishes hair is biotin, according to Earle.
