She was deemed the ‘People’s Princess’ and to see the lasting legacy of Princess Diana today is to see the truth of such a statement. In recent weeks, the Royal Family has been put under the spotlight, fielding shocking allegations that came to light during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s sit down with Oprah. It was upsetting, to say the least, but it also drew comparisons to the struggle faced by Princess Diana, which she shared in an infamous 1995 interview with Martin Bashir.
It’s hard to believe we are now nearing the 26-year anniversary of that BBC Panorama interview in which Diana shared with viewers the breakdown of her marriage, Prince Charles’ infidelity, and her own mental health struggle. The issues she expressed have never felt more timely and relevant, almost echoing those expressed by Meghan and Harry.
Now, a documentary on Diana’s tell-all interview is headed to our screens, called The Diana Interview: Revenge of A Princess. The documentary will reportedly examine how the historic BBC interview came into existence, the revelations made about her marriage to Charles, and her struggle with bulimia. The film is also set to include interviews with those who bore witness to the breakdown of her marriage and also plans to spotlight never-before-seen documents and footage from the original interview itself.
According to Variety, Channel Nine will air the two-part special in Australia. As of yet, there’s no release date but it seems that we can expect the documentary to land later this year. How the public absorbs these new revelations and how the Royal Family responds remains to be seen, but given the turmoil the Royal Family is already experiencing, it’s clear that 2021 has not been kind to the family so far.
