Many people who commit to working out regularly eventually come to realize that the mental health benefits of a regular exercise routine can be just as powerful—and life-changing—as the physical transformation that you experience. It’s a sentiment that actress Kristen Bell sums up perfectly in a new Instagram post published earlier today.
“I don’t work out to get a certain body shape. I work out for my mental health. And I notice a big difference when I do and when I don’t,” Bell wrote in the post’s caption. “When I don’t, I’m sad, irritable, anxious and lethargic. When I do, I’m content, motivated, peaceful and energetic.”
In the accompanying video, Bell shows herself fast-forwarding through a time-lapse of what appears to be a glute and core-crushing combo of pushups, plank rows, air squats, v-ups, and yes, some dreaded burpees to finish things off. “I thought the burpees at the end would kill me, but I’m very much alive and incredibly grateful for that blood pumping session,” Bell wrote, crediting the punishing workout to trainer Charlie Curtis.
