Captain Marvel star Brie Larson has been smashing her fitness goals lately. Just two weeks ago, she shared a video on Instagram in which she performed three one-armed pullups, something she had been training for with her coach Jason Walsh for some time. Shortly before that, she showed off her upper body strength in a weighted pullup video.
Larson’s most recent gym post marks another fitness milestone, complete with the caption: “One arm push-ups and @oliviarodrigo karaoke to start the day. She’s thriving.” The video shows Larson, hyped up by Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Jealousy, Jealousy’, getting down to perform a set of single-arm pushups and churning out three good-form reps, while being cheered on by Walsh.
The one-armed pushup can be a great strength goal to set for yourself once regular bodyweight pushups have ceased to present a challenge and you can perform them with ease and excellent technique. However, it’s a notoriously difficult move. “It’s a high-skill, high-strength pinnacle exercise,” Mike Fitch, C.S.C.S., of Global Bodyweight Training, told Men’s Health. “The move ensures that both of your arms are equally strong, and activates your core more than a standard pushup does, forcing it to work harder to stabilize your body.”
Looking to progress to using just one arm in your pushups? Start with the post pushup variation: “If you’ve ever wanted to do one-arm pushups, this is also a solid half-step from doing those that’ll push you to maintain good core accountability and tight pushup form,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel C.S.C.S. “The post pushup places a great majority of the load on your pressing side, but it still pushes you to keep your hips and shoulders square to the ground.”
