NubAbility Athletics Foundation is an organization that looks to provide opportunities for limb different youth (that’s a term for kids who are either congenital or traumatic amputees) in sports. The non-profit matches up kids with coaches with similar limb differences at camps held around the U.S. to help participants learn how to take on their chosen sports, no matter their perceived limitations.
That mission was made impressively clear when Twitter user Brad Vinyard posted a video from one of NubAbility’s camps. In the clip, a young man named Tim attempts a 20-inch box jump. Flanked by coaches, he stalls on his first attempts, clearly intimidated by the height of the platform.
But after he’s encouraged on by a coach on the other side of the box, who demands he land his feet up top, he keeps trying. In a sweat soaked tank top, Tim approaches the box once more, this time just making one leg on it, before stepping back in frustration.
Finally, after stepping back towards the box and another demand from a coach, Tim launches himself onto the box to the cheers of his coaches and the stunned relief of the young athlete, who on bounding down from the box lands into his coach’s arms overcome by emotion. By the end of the clip, it’s no surprise that many viewers might be crying too.
As Vinyard posted in his tweet:
Founder Kuhnert chimed in on the comments to Vinyard’s post to note that Tim has been going to the camp since he was young. Clearly, this young man has put in the hard work to get to where he is now—and will only get stronger going forward.
My favorite moment from Nubability Camp. Tim overcoming his fears and self-doubt and landing a 20” box jump. If you have not heard of Nubability Athletics and its founder, Sam Kuhnert, check them out.#NubCamp2019 #DontNeed2 #GameOn
