Not getting an erection is only “bad” if you are trying to have one and experience difficulty. Having an erection involves more than just a guy’s penis. The brain, nerves, muscles, hormones, and circulation are all involved in making it happen so there can be one or more reasons why you may have trouble becoming hard. Many people think erectile dysfunction (ED) only affects older men, but it is actually very common in young men as well. One study found that 31% of guys between age 18 and 59 have trouble getting or maintaining an erection.
Other possible causes may include: low testosterone (male hormone) level, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety and/or depression.
It’s a good idea to talk to your health care provider (HCP) about your concerns. Make sure you tell your HCP what medications you are taking (both prescription and over-the-counter, including supplements), if you smoke, use drugs and/or alcohol, steroids, and if you have been feeling anxious or depressed.
