Diabetes is a common condition that affects around four million people in the UK, and 90 per cent of cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. The condition may be caused by the pancreas not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin. Without enough insulin, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into useable energy. You could be at risk of diabetes if you often struggle to fall asleep, it’s been claimed.

Some diabetes patients may wake up feeling sleepy the next day, because they struggle to fall asleep, according to medical website Everyday Health.
It’s caused by hypoglycaemia – or a drop in blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar can also cause nighttime sweats and vivid dreams, it said.
“If hypoglycemia is suspected, it’s important to test blood sugar levels and follow the 15/15 rule if numbers are low,” said the medical website.
“Experts recommend having a 15g serving of carbohydrates, such as four ounces of fruit juice or two tablespoons of raisins, then waiting 15 minutes before retesting numbers.”
Having skin that “looks or feels weird” could also be a warning sign of diabetes, it revealed.
The skin’s folds and creases, such as around the armpits or behind the kneecap, may start to appear darker than normal.
“These velvety patches are caused by insulin resistance, which is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes,” it said.
“Extra insulin circulating in the body may trigger skin cells to rapidly reproduce, and the new cells have more melanin [or pigment], resulting in a patch of skin that’s darker than the skin surrounding it.”
Meanwhile, blurry vision could be caused by diabetes because of fluid level fluctuations in the eye.
These changes cause the eye to swell, which subsequently leads to blurred vision, it added.
High blood sugar levels may lead to some patients developing frequent yeast infections.
Symptoms of diabetes
Diabetes is a common life-long health condition. There are 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 500,000 who are living undiagnosed with the condition
A classic symptom of diabetes can lead to rapid weight loss
You should also never ignore erectile dysfunction, or vaginal dryness, as they could both be caused by diabetes.
But, many people may be living with diabetes without even knowing it, because symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
More common diabetes symptoms include feeling very thirsty, persistent tiredness, and having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal than normal.
Speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.
A quick blood test should be enough to reveal whether you have the condition.
