Even if you’re not that into astrology, you’ve probably still heard about Mercury going into retrograde once or twice (or literally every single time it happens). Well, it’s happening on Tuesday, March 5—but no, it’s not going to ruin your life.
Here’s everything you need to know about this classic astrological event, according to Donna Page, a certified astrologer in Atlanta.
What does Mercury in retrograde mean, exactly?
In astrology, the word “retrograde” simply means that something is moving backwards. So, when Mercury is in retrograde, it appears to be moving from east to west (instead of the west to east orbit it does on the reg), Page says. Every visible planet goes retrograde at some point, so this isn’t just a Mercury thing.
“Mercury in retrograde is a time when you’re meant to take a deep breath and catch up with projects or things you have going on,” says Page. It can feel a little emotionally overwhelming, but it’s nothing you can’t handle, she adds.
Still, this Mercury in retrograde is happening in Pisces, and that can create a little bit of a “woe is me” feeling, Page says. “There’s a bit of tendency to stop and ask, ‘am I getting what I want out of life? Is this or that working for me?'” she explains.
You might also feel like you’ve overcommitted to certain things, like saying you’d go to brunch with your S.O. at the exact same time you made a gym date with your BFF. Unsurprisingly, you might feel a little frazzled in the process.
It’s not all bad, though. Mercury in retrograde in Pisces is big for indulging your artistic side, Page says. So, pull out your old camera or dust off those paints you’ve been meaning to use for ages, and get creative. Even journaling or hitting up a concert will feel so, so good during this time.
How will this affect your zodiac sign?
Everyone is going to feel Mercury in retrograde on some level, but Pisces will feel it the most, followed by Virgo and Gemini, Page says.
This doesn’t mean you’re totally screwed if you belong to one of these signs, but take a sec and make sure all your stress-relieving techniques are in order (ya know, just to be safe). Maybe go for a run the morning of March 5, or listen to your favourite music on the way to work. Doing anything relaxing and/or artsy can definitely do you a solid in the mental health department.
How will Mercury in retrograde impact your sign in the future?
Moving forward, you may find yourself thinking more about what you need to weed out in your life. Maybe you need to stop doing that book club that feels like a chore to make more time for that pottery class you’ve been wanting to try.
You’ll also start thinking more about things you can do to feel rejuvenated and relaxed on a regular basis. And really, it doesn’t need to be complicated: Start by making a weekly date with your bubble bath and a glass of wine.
Overall, Page says that you shouldn’t freak out about Mercury in retrograde happening. “Your life is not going to fall apart,” she stresses.
