Grandma shares how she got rid of her ugly varicose veins in 90 minutes

How the human body can develop varicose veins

Janet Race, 68, lived with swollen and enlarged veins on her legs for more than 40 years – and now she’s got rid of them.

The grandmother, from Heacham, disliked her unsightly varicose veins, but “put up with them”.

Janet said: “My veins were just ugly. One leg was really horrible.”

Varicose veins are caused by weak vein walls and valves, the NHS says.

The health body explains: “Inside your veins are tiny one-way valves that open to let the blood through, and then close to prevent it flowing backwards.

“Sometimes the walls of the veins become stretched and lose their elasticity, causing the valves to weaken.”

Weakened valves enable the blood to leak and flow backwards, which means blood can pool in the veins and enlarge.

Having dropped two dress sizes, Janet decided enough was enough – she wanted to look as good as she felt.

Janet, now a size 10, said: “I had been going to my daughter’s Slimming World group and lost weight.

“And I thought, ‘I’d love to wear shorts and a skirt,’ which I couldn’t have done before.”

Following extensive research, Janet opted for a 90-minute treatment at the Veincentre in Norwich.

The minimally invasive procedure, known as endovenous laser ablation, targeted problematic veins; this was followed up by foam sclerotherapy.

Janet admitted: “I was really scared beforehand. My husband Jim came in with me as my comfort blanket.

“I put my headphones in and watched Strictly Come Dancing on my phone the entire time.”

The doctor made her feel safe and, since the treatment, Janet has “never looked back”.

Janet beamed: “It’s changed me completely. I now wear nice little dresses. I used to wear leggings and you could see my veins through them. Now I like being trendy.”

Veincentre has more than 30 clinics across the UK specialising in the treatment of varicose veins, thread veins and leg ulcers.
