This is rare symptom but nevertheless one that does occur.

Other rare symptoms include:
• Heart palpitations
• Loss of appetite
• Ringing ears (tinnitus)

Vitamin B12 deficiency has a wide range of other symptoms that may be present.
These include:
• Tiredness
• Feeling lethargic (a lack of energy)
• Feeling faint
• Becoming breathless
• Pins and needles
• Depression and confusion
• Problems with memory, understanding and judgement
The reason for these symptoms is due to a lack of oxygen in the body.

One of the roles Vitamin B12 plays is making new red blood cells.

It is these cells which carry oxygen around your body.

If left untreated, you can develop further complications as a result of not having enough B12.

As well as issues with your nervous system you might experience heart conditions, pregnancy complications, potential birth defects and fertility problems.

Vitamin B12 deficiency, that is also referred to as folate deficiency anaemia can have multiple causes.

The NHS has identified three.

The first is pernicious anaemia.

This is when your immune system attacks healthy cells in your stomach preventing your body from absorbing B12.

A lack of vitamins in your diet is another cause.

Vitamin B12 is present in meats, fish, milk, cheese eggs and some breakfast cereals.

Folate deficiency anaemia can also be caused by some medicines such as anticonvulsants, used to treat epileptic seizures, and proton pump inhibitors which ease the symptoms of acid reflux and treat stomach ulcers.
