Lizzo Tearfully Calls Out ‘Fatphobic’ And ‘Racist’ Haters Following Release Of ‘Rumours’

If you haven’t already seen the music video for Lizzo’s ‘Rumours,’ featuring a pregnant Cardi-B, stop what you’re doing (even if that means reading this) and press play immediately. It was expected that two of the world’s biggest stars coming together would create nothing short of iconic, but even we couldn’t have anticipated something this spectacular. With its Hercules-inspired theme, the makeup is shimmery and gold, with avant-garde brow looks and braided hairstyles. The highlighter is mesmerising, as is the set design. If ever there was a video that celebrates the female body as one of empowerment and strength, it’s this one.

But while the release of ‘Rumours’ and its music video should be a time of celebration for Lizzo, the artist has instead had to use her platform to educate others on fat phobia and racism. The tree-time Grammy winner took to her Instagram to do a live video in which she tearfully explained how much these horrible responses had affected her, revealing that she’s particularly sensitive when it comes to projects she’s been working so hard on.

“On the days when I should feel the happiest, it just – I feel so down,” said Lizzo, who added that she’s been doing 12-hour days with press, rehearsals, filming, writing music and then going into the studio for further sessions. “Sometimes I feel like the world just don’t love me back. It’s like it doesn’t matter how much positive energy you put into the world, you’re still gonna have people who have something mean to say about you.”

In the video – which has since been deleted but preserved by fans – Lizzo said that while she’s OK if people don’t like her music, what is particularly disheartening are the personal attacks she’s subjected to by people who feel it’s OK to comment on her appearance directly. “People saying shit about me that just doesn’t even make sense. It’s fatphobic, it’s racist, and it’s hurtful.”

Still, showing just how strong she is, Lizzo tried to remain positive and said she would not let the haters get her down. “I’m not making music for anybody. I’m a Black woman making music,” she said. “I make Black music, period. I’m not serving anyone but myself. Everyone is invited to a Lizzo show, to a Lizzo song. To this good energy. Everyone is invited…for the people that just are always going to have something negative to say about me, that has nothing to do with music, or the content of my character, or me as an artist, and just has everything to do with my body or whatever trope you think I fall into, suck my p***y from behind.”

She continued: “What I won’t accept is y’all doing this to Black women over and over and over again, especially us big Black girls. When we don’t fit into the box that you want to put us in, you just unleash hatred onto us. It’s not cool. I’m doing this shit for the big Black women in the future who just want to live their lives without being scrutinised or put into boxes.”

Since speaking up, many celebrities have voiced their support for Lizzo. Cardi B retweeted a fan’s capture of Lizzo’s video, commenting: “When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”

Lizzo tweeted: “Loving yourself in a world that don’t love u back takes an incredible amount of self awareness & a bullshit detector that can see through ass backwards societal standards…if u managed to love yourself today I’m proud of u. If you haven’t, I’m still proud of u. This shits hard.”
