Doctors warn against latest TikTok makeup hack intended to create ‘smooth’ look

Doctors have had their say on a new viral TikTok trend.

Users are uploading videos applying calamine lotion as a make-up primer in a 'beauty hack'.

Nothing is off limits when it comes to what TikTokers will experiment with.

Over the years TikTok has become a social media giant, with all sorts of tricks and beauty tips uploaded, setting the latest trends.

Now it seems users have set their hearts on another homemade make-up tip involving calamine lotion.

In response to more and more people using the new method, doctors have had their say on weather it is safe and if it should be used.

What is the calamine lotion TikTok trend?

The latest make-up hype on TikTok seems to be applying calamine lotion as a make-up primer.

Primers are originally designed to be used underneath eyeshadow, foundation and mascara to create a smoothing effect – while targeting concerns like oily or dry skin.

Calamine lotion itself is normally used to sooth itchy/burnt skin and can often be a method of treating chickenpox or other irritating skin rashes and infections.

But now, TikTokers have taken the cream used to treat sunburn, or itchy/inflamed skin and turned it into a makeup primer.

Those using the new trick seem to apply a thin layer onto skin before letting it dry and putting on make-up.

What have doctors said about the calamine lotion TikTok trend?

While doctors have accepted that calamine lotion does have soothing affects, they have also issued a warning on using the product.

Dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, spoke with The Washington Post about the issue.

She said: "Calamine lotion is made up of zinc oxide, ferric oxide, and phenol."

Zinc oxide is an astringent, which absorbs excess oils, while phenol is a strong exfoliant.

Dr Shirazi explained that combined, the two can be incredibly drying. Calamine, specifically, is intended as a spot treatment for oozing wounds due to skin rashes, bug bites, and infections.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Dr. Chimento said "using it too much or too often can over dry the skin and worsen some conditions, including acne.”

In the UK there has been a national shortage of calamine lotion recently too, leaving parents concerned about a lack of the product to treat their children for chickenpox.

Whether or not the high demand and short supply could be down to the new TikTok trend remains to be confirmed.
