Andy Murray health: Wimbledon star had ‘no idea’ when the pain would stop

Andy Murray is one of Britain’s finest tennis players, having broken numerous records on his way to the top. Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2012 US Open final, becoming the first British player since 1977, and the first British man since 1936, to win a Grand Slam singles tournament. As if that wasn’t enough, Murray went on to become the first British man to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles since Fred Perry in 1936, winning the tournament in 2013 and 2016.

Andy’s career may have been in the stratosphere but he had been wrestling with a hip injury for many years.

Last year, his injury proved too much and he was knocked out of the Australian Open.

The setback drove Andy to have major surgery on his hip.

Ahead of his surgery, he said: “I’m not sure I’m able to play through the pain for another four or five months.”

“I’m not feeling good, I’ve been struggling for a long time.

“I’ve been in a lot of pain for about 20 months now. I’ve pretty much done everything I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn’t helped loads.”

He continued: “I’m in a better place than I was six months ago but I’m still in a lot of pain. I can still play to a level, but not a level I have played at.

“The pain is too much really. I need to have an end point because I’m playing with no idea of when the pain will stop.”

The blow was particularly devastating for Andy because he had only just returned to the court.

The Wimbledon star had previously missed almost a year of action after recovering from his hip injury.

But, he had a resurfacing operation later that month – a decision that has proved judicious.

Andy will be joining Johanna Konta in next week’s Battle of the Brits Team Tennis tournament in London.

What is a hip resurfacing operation?

Hip resurfacing is a type of surgery to replace a damaged hip joint.

As John Hopkin’s Medicine explains, in the hip joint, the rounded head of the thigh bone (the femoral head) moves smoothly inside the round socket of the hip bone.

“Normally, the socket is lined with cartilage, which helps the bones move smoothly,” notes the health body.

When there is damage to this joint, moving the femoral head may cause pain as the bones scrape together abnormally.

“During hip resurfacing, your surgeon makes an incision to access your hip bone and thighbone,” it says.

According to Mayo Clinic, the bone is then reshaped and capped with a metal prosthesis.

As the health body explains, the best candidates for hip resurfacing are men under 60 who have strong, healthy bones.
