Redefine Your Core Training With This Total-Body Abs Workout

Not every core workout is created equal.

You probably have a go-to series of crunches, planks, and maybe a twist or two you depend on to tick the abs box of your workout’s checklist. Doing something is better than doing absolutely nothing—but if you really want to see results in both the aesthetics and strength departments, you’re going to need a smarter, more balanced core routine.

That’s why Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. developed the Epic Abs program for All Out Studio. The workouts that make up the plan are probably a lot different than any of the ab training you’ve done in the past. Samuel’s novel approach is as much due to the exercises his sessions leave out aa much as the new, fundamentals-based movements you’ll be tasked to try.

“I want to redefine how you think about core training,” says Samuel, who designed the entire Epic Abs program without a single situp. “We’re going to do a lot of functional core work—we’re going to challenge our abs to work with our glutes and lower back as a unit and that’s how we’re going to build core strength, it’s going to give us the six-pack we want, and it’s going to make us stronger for everything else.”

The session, which clocks in at just under 30 minutes, will torch your core—but your whole body will be challenged by these super effective exercises. All you need is a light- to medium-weight dumbbell and some space to spread out on the floor to get going.
